The Biggest Scrap Recyclers: What Data Shows

Updated 27 October 2026. Search for "biggest scrap recyclers in the world" and you will find tidy top-10 lists with tonnages next to every name. We went looking for the source of those numbers and could not find an independent, current ranking. The lists we found are mostly old, mix incompatible measures or copy company marketing. So this article does something more useful than a made-up league table: it sets out what the best-known recyclers publish about themselves, says what each number does and does not measure, and explains why a clean ranking is not possible.

It is general information, not investment advice, and the figures are as published by the sources named.

Four-tile card on large scrap recyclers: Sims 6.3 million tonnes of sales in FY26, Steel Dynamics 6.16 million gross tons of ferrous scrap shipped in 2025, EMR about 10 million tonnes of material a year, Nucor's DJJ capacity above 5 million tonnes

What the large recyclers report

CompanyFigureWhat it measures
Sims Limited (Australia, US, UK)6.3 million tonnes of proprietary sales in FY26; group intake up 4.9% to 6.4 million tonnesMetal the company bought, processed and sold; ferrous and non-ferrous together
Steel Dynamics, including OmniSource (US)6,160,797 gross tons of ferrous metal shipped in 2025, of which about 65% went to its own millsFerrous only; gross tons are not metric tonnes
European Metal Recycling, EMR (Netherlands, UK, Germany, US)About 10 million tonnes a year, by its own descriptionAll materials it recycles, including plastics, so not comparable with metal-only figures
Nucor, through The David J. Joseph Company (US)Capacity to sort and recycle more than 5 million tonnes of ferrous and non-ferrous scrapCapacity, not actual volume
Commercial Metals Company (US, Poland)Nearly 5 million tons a year, in one secondary sourceUnverified against the company's own filing

Sources: Sims FY26 results and CRU reporting [1][2]; Steel Dynamics 2025 annual report [3]; EMR company materials [4]; David J. Joseph Company [5]. The Steel Dynamics table was extracted imperfectly, so we treat the column alignment as likely but not confirmed. We did not find current volume figures for Radius Recycling, the former Schnitzer Steel.

Why you cannot rank them

Five things make a ranking dishonest.

  1. Sales, intake, shipments and capacity are different numbers. Sims reports sales and intake. Steel Dynamics reports shipments. Nucor's figure is capacity. Putting them in one column compares unlike things.
  2. Gross tons are not tonnes. A gross ton is 2,240 pounds and a metric tonne is about 2,205 pounds. For a 6 million figure the gap is large enough to change a ranking.
  3. Ferrous and non-ferrous are different businesses. A tonne of steel scrap is worth far less than a tonne of copper. A company with fewer tonnes can handle more value.
  4. Scope varies. EMR's 10 million tonnes covers all waste and plastics as well as metal. Comparing it with a ferrous-only figure inflates one side.
  5. Some of the biggest names are not scrap companies. Steelmakers, such as Turkish arc furnace mills, melt tens of millions of tonnes of scrap a year but do not trade it. Chinese, Indian and Turkish processors and many private groups do not publish volumes. Any list drawn only from listed companies is incomplete.

The only ranking we found with real method was Recycling Today's list of the largest ferrous scrap processors, but the editions we found date from the early 2010s, when OmniSource and Schnitzer together processed 4.3 million tons of ferrous scrap in 2013 [6]. It is a useful reminder of how old most "top 10" figures are.

Biggest by what measure?

It is more honest to ask a narrower question. A few answers we can support:

  • Biggest reported metal sales in the group we checked: Sims, at 6.3 million tonnes, though Steel Dynamics' ferrous shipments are in the same range in gross tons.
  • Biggest self-described by total material: EMR, at about 10 million tonnes, with the caveat above.
  • Biggest recycler owned by a steelmaker: Steel Dynamics/OmniSource and Nucor/DJJ, which supply their own furnaces first. In Steel Dynamics' case, about 65% of ferrous shipments in 2025 went to its own mills [3].

The biggest machines

If you mean the biggest equipment, the claims are mostly from manufacturers and site operators. The most frequently cited is the Sims shredder at Newport in Wales, a 9,200 horsepower machine described as able to process 450 end-of-life vehicles an hour. Wendt describes its 130 Heavy as the world's largest, and Upstate Shredding in New York reports two very large shredders of its own, one at 10,000 horsepower. Nobody has independently measured them, and horsepower, throughput and footprint give different winners [7].

Frequently asked questions

Who is the biggest scrap recycler in the world?

There is no independent ranking. By reported metal sales Sims (6.3 million tonnes in FY26) is among the largest, and EMR describes itself as recycling about 10 million tonnes of all materials a year [1][4].

What is the world's biggest scrapyard?

Not established. Several sites claim the largest shredder, but the claims come from manufacturers and operators [7].

Are top-10 lists reliable?

Rarely. Most mix sales, capacity and intake, or use figures a decade old.

Why don't steel mills appear on these lists?

They melt scrap but usually do not report it as a traded volume.

What is the difference between a tonne and a gross ton?

A metric tonne is 1,000 kg. A gross ton is 2,240 pounds, about 1,016 kg.
